Application Server

Application servers provide a server-side platform for building and deploying business logic that can be distributed across both client and server or can reside solely on the server. An application server extends a Web server's capabilities to generate a dynamic response to Web application requests, typically using an object oriented programming technology such as J2EE or .NET.
All application servers have three discrete layers that interoperate: business logic layer, presentation layer, and data access layer. The business logic layer is the heart of the application server where all the intelligence and business rules are encapsulated in object-oriented reusable components.
The data access layer allows the integration of specialised and discrete services that are made available to the components in the business logic layer. The presentation layer provides the methods and interfaces for delivering content from the application server.
Most application servers, based on J2EE or .NET platforms provide a multi-tier or n-tier-distributed model that includes a Client Tier (applications or browsers) , a Middle Tier (Web Server and an Application Server) and an Enterprise Information System Tier (applications, files and databases).
